Samba bug in OS X allows hackers root access

According to PC World, Symantec has upped the warning level to Mac users this week on a Samba exploit first discovered in May of this year after discovering the exploit has been uploaded to the Metasploit hacking framework. Despite Samba’s developers having released a fix a day after the discovery, Apple has yet to patch the hole.

The exploit can allegedly allow a hacker to gain root access to a Mac which is running Samba. Samba is turned on in Macs when a user checks the “Windows File Sharing” checkbox in the System Preferences’ “Sharing” panel. Symantec suggests Mac users uncheck that box until Apple releases a patch (not exactly the solution many of us on mixed networks would like to hear).

Apple planning ad-funded iTunes?

"If you're not a music industry executive, you probably haven't spent much time perusing the documents from the recent UK Copyright Tribunal's decision on online royalty rates for music publishers. But some people have, and they've turned up evidence that Apple is maybe planning to introduce ad-funded music on iTunes," Stuart Dredge reports for Tech Digest.

"The Tribunal's decision quotes witness evidence from iTunes VP Eddie Cue, where he states that Apple would only pay advertising revenue where 'that revenue is earned as a result of an advertisement, sponsorship or a click-through link located on a Licensed service … and only where the Licensed Service is offered to the User at a price which has been artificially depressed to reflect such revenue,'" Dredge reports.

Apple brand appeal increases

Apple's brand appeal has increased 17.7 percent to overseas customers, according to a new study of top global brands. The research -- which looked at a mix of 33 U.S. brands between November of 2006 and January of 2007 baesd on a total of 30,000 interviews with consumers at least 13 years old -- revealed that U.S. brands are losing traction with foreign customers overall, but that companies like Apple and Google are thwarting the downward trend, according to CNNMoney.com. "Today it's more difficult to get people to like your brand because consumers in developing and emerging markets have become much more discerning," said Jennifer James, a consultant with Gfk Roper Consulting.

"Last year there was still heightened enthusiasm for American brands and also for European and other international brands. That's starting to wane." Google managed to increase its brand popularity with overseas customers by allowing users to customize their experience, while Apple's popularity gain likely ensued as a result of the company's string of popular product releases.

iPhone “a Joy to Use”

“After more than a week of using it—as my only personal phone—I’m still gushing,” reports Stephanie Angelyn Casola (hometownlife.com) of her new iPhone. It provided “the most painless set-up for a new cell phone I’ve ever experienced.” Casola explains that she easily assigned “pictures to my contacts. Then, when someone calls, I can see instantly who it is.” “The ease with which this is accomplished makes it easy to see why iPhone is so revolutionary. It’s not just the combination of uses, it’s the way Apple has managed to make this device so very simple.”
